I have written about Mary of Burgundy before and you can read the article about her early death here. After her death, she was buried in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges in Belgium, originally next to her father. Her father’s remains were not found during renovations and it’s possible he was moved to the St. Donatius Cathedral. His effigy does remain and stands beside hers. The heart of her son, Philip the Handsome, was buried with her. Her effigy was modelled after her death mask.

The church was absolutely gorgeous and packed with tourists. They are doing some renovations, but luckily the tombs were accessible. The renovations are expected to last until 2018 and a reduced entrance is applied due to this. The tombs are stunning and wonderfully detailed. I could not stop taking pictures!
Thank you for this post. My husband and I have been thinking about our two trips to Belgium since last week’s attacks. Bruges and the Church of Our Lady were great highlights on our first trip!
