Queen Sophie’s Diamond Circle Tiara was owned by Sophie of Prussia, later Queen of Greece.
The tiara’s provenance is unclear, but it may have been a wedding present for Sophie when she married Crown Prince Constantine in 1889.
She wore the tiara often, both as Crown Princess and as Queen. She loaned the tiara to her daughter, Helen, later the Queen Mother of Romania, who was photographed wearing it.
In 1938, the tiara went to Sophie’s daughter-in-law, Frederica of Hanover, who became the penultimate Queen of Greece. She wore the tiara on her wedding day.
Frederica once loaned the tiara to Ingrid of Sweden, Queen of Denmark, who was the mother of Frederica’s daughter-in-law, Anne-Marie. When the Greek monarchy was abolished, the tiara disappeared from public view for almost 50 years.
It reappeared in 2012, when Marie-Chantal, the wife of Crown Prince Pavlos, wore the tiara at a banquet for Queen Margrethe II of Denmark’s Ruby Jubilee.1
