Queen Victoria to the Crown Princess of Prussia – 29 March 1879

The Crown Princess’ son Prince Waldemar had died of diphtheria at the age of 11.

My poor darling child, my heart bleeds and aches for you to that extent I cannot describe it. I am so miserable about you. You have, thank God, dear kind Fritz1 near you who will share all with you and that is a blessing. Could I only do something for you to comfort you? I wish you could come here but you cannot leave Charlotte 2 and if later on you should like one of the cottages at Osborne or Abergeldie I would too gladly offer them. I would wish to do anything for you to help and soothe you at this terrible affliction.3
