On 19 June 1976, Silvia Sommerlath became Queen of Sweden when she married King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
They had met during the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, and they announced their engagement on 12 March 1976. Silvia’s engagement ring had belonged to the King’s late mother.
The wedding took place at Storkyrkan in Stockholm.
Silvia wore a silk duchesse satin gown with a high neck and long sleeves. Her train, which had previously been worn by the King’s sister, Princesses Birgitta and Désirée, extended from the shoulders. The dress was designed by Marc Bohan for Dior. Silvia wore a lace veil that had belonged to Queen Sofia and was also worn by Carl Gustaf’s mother and sisters. The veil was held in place with the Cameo Tiara.
King Carl Gustaf wore the uniform of an Admiral in the Swedish Royal Navy with the insignia of the Order of the Seraphim, Order of the Sword, Order of the Polar Star, Order of Vasa and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
At the end of the ceremony, Silvia emerged as Queen consort of Sweden.
