The Dutch Sapphire Necklace Tiara began its life as a different jewel.

King William III of the Netherlands purchased the choker with diamonds and sapphires for his second wife, Queen Emma. After several additions and adjustments, the necklace was mounted as a tiara in the 21st century.

The new tiara was topped by five lozenge-shaped sapphire and diamond ornaments. These ornaments came from a wedding gift parure which had been given to Queen Wilhelmina on behalf of the Dutch people in 1901.

Princess Margriet was the first to wear the new tiara in 2009. It has since become a much-worn piece by several royal women.1
