The former home of a Portuguese Queen – Schloss Jägerhof

Once upon a time, this place was called Schloss Jägerhof and it was inhabited by Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, the wife of the late Johann Wilhelm, Elector Palatine, visited by Marie Louise of Austria, wife of Emperor Napoleon I and until 1885 it was used as a residence for the family of Karl Anton, Prince of Hohenzollern. Most notably, his daughter Stephanie, later Queen of Portugal, and her sister Marie, later Countess of Flanderswould have lived in this castle.

As it was considered to be too small, it was sold to the city of Düsseldorf in 1909. The castle was heavily damaged in 1943 by an air raid and it wasn’t rebuilt under 1950. In 1955 the Goethe Museum opened its doors, and since then very little of its royal past can be found. It’s a shame really, as it’s such a gorgeous building.

It costs just €4,00 to visit the museum, but keep in mind that it was rebuilt with the museum in mind. I didn’t even go in, but simply admired it from outside before walking through the former royal gardens.
