Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg was born 11 November 1599 in Königsberg, to parents John Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburg, and his wife Anna, Duchess of Prussia. Her mother has been described as dominant, and she practised strict Lutheran orthodoxy.
