When Pharaoh Thutmose II died, he left an heir far too young to rule Egypt. His widow Hatshepsut stepped up to take his place. For at least the next 20 years, Hatshepsut ruled as Pharaoh King of Egypt in an era of prosperous growth and peace. When she died, her nephew Thutmose III attempted to smear her good name and wipe her memory from history. However, despite his efforts, his aunt Hatshepsut holds the title of most famous native Egyptian woman to ever rule as pharaoh; she also retains a legacy as one of the most successful female leaders in early history.

Hatshepsut is perhaps one of the most famous Pharaohs, but we know frustratingly little about her, due to attempts to remove her from her history. Hatshepsut had married her half-brother Thutmose II and co-reigned with him until his death in 1479 B.C. When he died, Hatshepsut was not yet 30-years-old. The couple only had one child together, a daughter named Neferure and Thutmose II had fathered a son by his lower wife, Isis. The boy, now Thutmose III, was just two years old and Hatshepsut became the principal ruler during his reign.

Hatshepsut reigned successfully for 22 years and probably died from cancer caused by a cream she used for skin. It was after her death, that her removal from history was begun by Thutmose III.

Hatshepsut: The Pharaoh-Queen of Egypt is very well written and I indeed finished the book in less than 60 minutes. Despite the shortness of the book, I don’t feel like I’ve missed anything. These book really are the perfect way to get into a subject.
