The mayor of Ekaterinburg, Evgeny Roizman, has sent an invitation to members of the British royal family to attend the events commemorating the centenary of the martyrdom of Emperor Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra Feodorovna and their five children. This invitation was delivered through the British ambassador, Laurie Bristow.

“Inasmuch as the British and Russian crowns were bound by blood, Roizman conveyed through the ambassador an invitation to the members of the British Royal Family to attend the ‘Royal Days’ events in the Ural capital,” a message on the mayor’s website reads.

King George V, Her Majesty The Queen’s grandfather, was a first cousin of Emperor Nicholas II and had initially given the Russian Imperial family asylum, which was eventually rescinded. The family remained in Russia and were murdered on 17 July 1917, along with their doctors and three servants.

The “Royal Days” festival is an Orthodox cultural annual festival timed to coincide with the date of the murders. The program begins in June and will end with a procession on the night of 17 July from the Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land, which was built on the site of the Ipatiev House where the murders took place.
